What is a Study Permit?

The study permit is a permit which allows foreign nationals to study in a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. You should apply for a Study Permit before your travel to Canada.

The study permit is NOT a visa. You need to apply for a visa to Canada. If your study permit is approved, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will issue a visa with Study Permit.

What does DLI stand for?

DLI stands for Designated Learning Institution. It is a school approved by a provincial of territorial government to host international students.

In order to apply for a Study Permit, a foreign national need a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a Designated Learning Institution.

Who needs a Study Permit to Canada?

A foreign national is required to obtain a Study Permit for engaging in academic, professional, vocational or other education or training that is more than 6 months in duration at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada

Who does not need a Study Permit to Canada?

  1. Minor children inside Canada as long as they maintain Visitor Status
  2. Family members and members of the private staff of accredited foreign representatives
  3. Members of the armed forces of a country designated for the purposes of the Visiting Forces Act
  4. Short-term courses (shorter than 6 months)
  5. Registered Indians

How long can I stay in Canada with a Study Permit?

  1. A study permit is usually valid for the length of your study program + extra 90 days. The extra 90days allows you to prepare to leave Canada or extend your stay upon specific eligibility.
  2. If you will finish your course AFTER your study permit expires: you MUST extend your stay as a student or NEED to stop studying and leave Canada.
  3. If you finish your course BEFORE your study expires: your permit will stop being valid 90 days after you receive letter of completion, official transcript from your school NO MATTER WHAT day is printed on your Study Permit.

How can I apply for a Study Permit?

  1. Apply for Letter of Acceptance from a DLI school  
  2. Brainstorm Study Plan
  3. Apply online for a Study Permit via MyCIC
  4. Citizens of China, India, Morocco, Pakistan, the Philippines, Senegal or Vietnam might be able to apply through fast stream Study Direct Stream
  5. If applying through Study Direct Stream, no need to prove Financial Status
  6. Apply for family member to come to Canada with you at the same time if applicable

Who can I bring with me to Canada?

  1. If your study in Canada is in DLI school with the course length for at least 8 months, you may be able to bring for family members with you
  2. Your family members are: spouse, common-law partner, dependent children under the age of 22
  3. Family members may be eligible for an Open Work Permit, Study Permit or a Visitor Visa.

How to change your current status to Study Permit inside Canada?

  1. Have a Letter of Acceptance from a DLI school
  2. Have a valid status as Student or Worker or a dependent of someone who has Student or Worker status in Canada
  3. Visitor Status has to apply as outside Canadaà different form

  1. Study Permit Fee: $150/person
  2. Biometric Fee: $85/person or $170 per family no matter how many people
  3. Open Work Permit: $255 for spouse or common-law partner
  4. Visitor Visa for dependent children: $100 per child
